CALVARY CHURCH HONORS DON & NONIE LERAAS:
A Lifetime of Memories
and A History of a Church
By Alan Shifley, Contributing Writer
After 50 years of dedicated service at Calvary, Don and Nonie Leraas are retiring to Oregon. Don and Nonie have touched each and every one of us in some way. If you were in the youth group, took a bus trip, went to Carol Sing, attended a service or just walked into the sanctuary building, Don and Nonie had a part in making it possible.
Don and Nonie eloped from North Dakota to California in October 1957. A couple years later, they began to attend Calvary Chuch. Blaine Bishop had been the pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Fargo, North Dakota, where Don’s family had attended. That same year, Don took over the bus ministry "just for a little while, until someone else does." That "little while" soon became 50 years!
A one room "house" behind the rest home became the couple's first residence in Los Gatos. Borrowing two plates and two forks from their friends, the Pearces, they made it a home. From there, they moved to a house on Caldwell Avenue and welcomed their first daughter Tammy. Their son Mike was born later after they had moved into another home on Los Gatos Boulevard. In 1966, after living on Westchester Drive for a year, the Leraas family moved to Thomas Drive where they have lived ever since.
On Sunday, April 26, Calvary Church will host an open house for Don and Nonie to celebrate their years in Los Gatos with family and friends. The open house will held from 4-6pm in Parkside 1 & 2. Many family and friends have submitted memories of Don and Nonie (click on link below). If you would like to submit a memory to this list, please email info@calvarylg.com.
