CALVARY KIDS GO TO THE XTREME THIS SUMMER
By: Carolyn R. Bennett
August had arrived. Xtreme Camp was right around the corner. Shayna (10 years old) was nervous, but all her jitters turned to excitement when she began to interact with the other campers. By the end of the week, she was full of confidence.
"I learned how to trust God while I was having a lot of fun," says Shayna. "Everyone there comforts and supports you, especially the counselors."
With a very small counselor-to-camper ratio (about 1-to-6), many children just like Shayna are able to receive the individual, one-on-one attention they need to feel comfortable and gain confidence in themselves.
"It gets them out of their comfort zone," says Joy Yankey, Children's Ministry Director at Calvary Church and director of Xtreme Camp. "Children who come afraid of the ropes course are doing the ropes course with confidence by the end of the week."
Many of the campers who attend are not regular attenders of Calvary Church. Several have never even heard about Jesus. Each year, children make decisions to follow Him.
"We make a mess and have a lot of fun, but the kids come away with great experiences and a foundation of faith," says Nicole Yankey, who attended camp for 6 years, 4 years as a counselor. "Its a real growing experience."
